2007 funding round

Details of the 2007 grant funding round will be announced soon.

About the Foundation

The Golden Casket Foundation distributes grants for medical research projects or vital research equipment so Queensland hospitals, health services and independent medical research institutes can continue their world class research.

In April 2005, the Golden Casket Foundation was announced as a key addition to the Queensland Government's Smart State Strategy. The Golden Casket Foundation represents a partnership between Golden Casket Lottery Corporation Limited and Queensland Treasury, promoting stronger, healthier and more resilient communities.

The Golden Casket Foundation has been established using revenue earned from interest on unclaimed first division lotto prizes.

The prize has been claimed

The Golden Casket Foundation is funded from interest earned on all unclaimed first division lottery prize money.  On May 23 2007, the then Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure, Anna Bligh MP, announced that the $23.3 milion Powerball prize drawn on 30 September 2004 has been claimed.  As such, the Foundation will now draw to a close after allocating any remaining funds.

Previous Rounds

The Golden Casket Foundation will leave a tangible legacy throughout Queensland.  Over the three rounds of grants it has distributed, several million dollars have directly benefited medical research in Queensland.

The Honourable Anna Bligh MP announced the first round of grants in December 2005.  Almost $1 million in funding was injected into vital Queensland-based medical research.  Grants were distributed to five organisations in areas as diverse as vaccination, caner research and inflammatory bowel disease.  The good news continued in 2006 with the announcement of a further $1.2 million to be extended to research programs studying obesity, burns care, mental health and further cancer research.

Who can apply for a grant?

Eligible research organisations in hospitals, universities and independent medical institutes across Queensland can apply for up to $250,000 for health and medical research projects and equipment.

Each round, the Golden Casket Foundation Committee seeks leaders in the health and medical research sector to peer review applications. This ensures that successful applications are of the highest scientific and ethical standards.
